Makgadikgadi Salt Pans - Ancient salt flats and endless vistas
The Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana form one of the most fascinating and unique landscapes in Africa. These gigantic salt flats – collectively larger than Belgium – are remnants of a prehistoric lake that was once the largest inland lake in Africa. Today, they form a surreal backdrop of glistening white plains, whimsical baobab trees, and a surprisingly rich biodiversity.
What at first glance appears to be a desolate landscape turns out to be a place full of life and experience. From small groups of curious meerkats to majestic lions and large herds of zebras and wildebeest during the rainy season – the Makgadikgadi Pans offer a safari experience like no other.
During your visit, you can participate in a wide range of activities, depending on the season:
Zebra and wildebeest migration (November – March)
In the wet season, one of Africa’s largest mammal migrations passes through the northern part of the Pans. A spectacular natural phenomenon that you can experience up close.
