Makgadikgadi Salt Pans - Ancient salt flats and endless vistas

The Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana form one of the most fascinating and unique landscapes in Africa. These gigantic salt flats – collectively larger than Belgium – are remnants of a prehistoric lake that was once the largest inland lake in Africa. Today, they form a surreal backdrop of glistening white plains, whimsical baobab trees, and a surprisingly rich biodiversity.

What at first glance appears to be a desolate landscape turns out to be a place full of life and experience. From small groups of curious meerkats to majestic lions and large herds of zebras and wildebeest during the rainy season – the Makgadikgadi Pans offer a safari experience like no other.

During your visit, you can participate in a wide range of activities, depending on the season:

Zebra and wildebeest migration (November – March)
In the wet season, one of Africa’s largest mammal migrations passes through the northern part of the Pans. A spectacular natural phenomenon that you can experience up close.

Bird watching (November – March)
For bird enthusiasts, this is a true paradise, with thousands of flamingos, pelicans, and many other species descending on the area during the wet season.

Quad biking across the salt flats (June – October)
Experience the immense sense of space and silence during a guided quad bike tour across the endless salt flats – one of the most iconic ways to experience this environment.

Sleeping under the stars (mid-June – September)
In clear weather, you can choose to spend the night under the open sky on the salt pan itself. An unforgettable experience where you fall asleep under a sky full of twinkling stars.

Walking with Bushmen
Learn about the traditional life of the San people during a guided walk. They share their knowledge of survival techniques, local flora and fauna, and ancient stories.

Close-up meerkat spotting
Come face to face with a group of meerkats, completely accustomed to humans! Experience how these curious animals behave – sometimes they even climb on your shoulder or head to get a better look around!

Game drives & safaris
Explore the vast plains and surrounding savannas in open safari vehicles. Spot Kalahari lions, brown hyenas, springboks, and oryx in their natural habitat.
