Family Tour Zimbabwe & Botswana

14 days / 13 nights
Back to all safari tours
This family safari through Zimbabwe and Botswana is designed for families seeking real experiences: adventure that feels safe, nature that amazes children, and lodges and camps where everyone feels at home. From the thundering mist of Victoria Falls to the whisper-quiet waterways of the Okavango Delta — each day brings new discoveries, new animals, and new stories to take home.

An ideal family safari through Victoria Falls, Chobe, Khwai, the Okavango Delta, and the Makgadikgadi salt pans

With child-friendly safari activities, expert guides, and a comfortable itinerary, this is an ideal combination for families with children and teenagers. Together, you’ll experience the true beauty of Africa. Thanks to multiple bush plane flights, which are an adventure in themselves, you avoid long, tiring drives. Children love seeing elephants, rivers, and islands from the air — as if flying over a huge living atlas.

  • Route: Victoria Falls – Chobe – Mababe – Okavango Delta – Makgadikgadi – Maun
  • Transport: Transfers by 4×4 and bush plane
  • Accommodation in: Pamarah Lodge, Chobe Elephant Camp, Nokanyana Lodge, Mopiri Lodge, Planet Baobab, Sedia Hotel

Day 1–3

Victoria Falls – The Smoke That Thunders (Mosi-oa-Tunya)

Stay: Pamarah Lodge (3 nights)

Your family adventure in Africa begins at the world-famous Victoria Falls. A walk through the tropical rainforest along the viewpoints immediately impresses: the mist feels like stepping into a fairy tale world, and children can almost hear the enormous power of the water vibrating in the air.

Looking for fun and adventure? This is the place where families can really let loose: Africa’s adventure capital.
Choose a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, where hippos float peacefully in the evening light and parents enjoy a sundowner. Or opt for a rhino safari in Zambia.
The most adventurous family members can choose a helicopter flight “Flight of Angels”, a microlight experience, rafting on the “mighty” Zambezi, zip-lining, or even bungee jumping from the bridge (age-dependent).
After each day full of activities, Pamarah Lodge is a relaxing haven, far away from the hustle and bustle.

Day 4–5

Chobe National Park – Elephant Paradise for Families

Accommodation: Chobe Elephant Camp (2 nights)
Transport: By car from Pamarah Lodge to Chobe Elephant Camp

After crossing the border into Botswana, you’ll drive to Chobe Elephant Camp, situated on a hill overlooking the river. Chobe is known for Africa’s largest elephant population — and you’ll see it. During a boat safari on the Chobe River, you’ll sail among large herds of elephants, crocodiles sunbathing on the banks, and hippos submerging. Keep your camera ready!

In the morning, you’ll set out on a 4×4 safari: perfect for spotting buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, birds of prey, and perhaps a leopard or lion. An optional visit to a local village provides a nice cultural change.

Day 6–8

Mababe & Khwai – River, Savanna, and Predators

Accommodation: Nokanyana Lodge (3 nights)
Transport: Bush plane from Kasane Airport to Khwai Community Airstrip

After your stay in Chobe, you’ll fly by bush plane to Khwai.
This short flight is exciting for children, offers beautiful views, and avoids a long, tiring drive over land.

Nokanyana Lodge is located in a beautiful spot along the Khwai River. Here, elephants, antelopes, and hippos come to drink — often visible from the terrace. The area is known as one of Botswana’s most wildlife-rich regions.

During day and even night safaris, you’ll search for lions, leopards, and (with some luck) wild dogs. Children love learning to recognize tracks during a nature walk (age-dependent) or spotting predators in the twilight.

In between, the lodge’s swimming pool offers a wonderful place to relax.

Day 9–10

Okavango Delta – Waterways, Mokoros, and Island Tranquility

Accommodation: Mopiri Lodge (2 nights)
Transport: Bush plane Khwai Community Airstrip to Mopiri Airstrip + boat trip

From Khwai, you’ll take a bush plane to the Okavango Delta, followed by a boat trip. This combination of flying and sailing is an adventure in itself and makes the transition to the Delta extra fun for children.

You’ll sail to Mopiri Lodge, on an island in the middle of the Okavango Delta. What an entrance! The Delta is a world of calm lagoons, reed beds, and birds all around you.

During a mokoro trip, you’ll glide almost silently between water lilies, while herons, kingfishers, and fish eagles make their appearance.
Boat safaris, bush walks, fishing, and the popular floating river pool provide plenty of variety.

During a sunset cruise, hippos float peacefully in the water as the sky slowly turns orange. Occasionally, their deep, rumbling roar can be heard: “HROOOF-hroof-hroof-hroof!”, as if they’re greeting you. A typical sound that will stay with children and parents alike.

Day 11–12

Makgadikgadi – Salt Pans & Meerkats

Accommodation: Planet Baobab (2 nights)
Transport: Bush plane from Mopiri Airstrip to Planet Baobab

After your island stay, you’ll fly by bush plane to the Makgadikgadi region.
A spectacular and comfortable way to see the enormous salt pans from above — and again a great time-saver for families.

The Makgadikgadi salt pans are a completely new type of landscape: open, light, and almost otherworldly. Planet Baobab is a colorful, playful lodge and ideal for families.

A visit to a meerkat colony is often the highlight for children.
Furthermore, you can (in the right season) quad bike across the pans, walk among ancient baobabs, swim in the largest pool in the Kalahari Desert, or enjoy the space and silence. You might even be able to sleep on the salt pans under the impressive starry sky. That’s when you truly fall silent!

Day 13

Maun – African Atmosphere and a Peaceful Conclusion

Accommodation: Sedia Hotel (1 night)
Transport: By car from Planet Baobab to Maun

From Planet Baobab, a comfortable minibus will take you to Maun, the tourist capital of Botswana. Here you’ll enjoy a relaxing last day. Visit a local market, relax by the pool, or take an optional helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta for a spectacular finale.

Day 14

Departure from Maun

With your camera full of sunsets, wildlife, and family fun, you’ll return home. A journey that will continue to resonate warmly for a very long time.
